đŠ 1. Context and Significance
In the previous verse, Krishna declared external pleasures as 'sources of misery'. However, the forces of Kama (Desire) and Krodha (Anger) within a human are extremely powerful. In this verse, Krishna challenges us: the true 'Hero' and the 'Happy' one is he who has the strength to withstand these impulses.

Sa yuktaá¸Ĩ sa sukhÄĢ naraá¸Ĩ
đ️ 4. Special Structure of Verse
This verse is like a 'Test':
1. Condition: Before giving up the body (Prak sharira-vimokshanat).
2. Action: One who is able to 'Withstand' (Shaknoti sodhum).
3. Enemy: The 'Impulse' (Vegam) born of Desire and Anger.
4. Result: He is a Yogi (Yuktah) and He is Happy (Sukhi).
đ 5. Word Meanings with Analysis
| Word | Detailed Analysis (English) |
|---|---|
| Shaknoti | Is able: Has the strength/capacity. |
| Iha Eva | Here itself: In this world/life. |
| Yah | Who: The seeker. |
| Sodhum | To withstand/tolerate: To bear without breaking. |
| Prak | Before: Prior to. |
| Sharira-vimokshanat | Liberation from body: Death. |
| Kama-krodha-udbhavam | Born of lust and anger: Originating from desire and rage. |
| Vegam | Impulse/Force: The rushing drive/pressure. |
| Sa Yuktah | He is united (Yogi): He is harmonized. |
| Sa Sukhi Narah | He is a happy man: Only he enjoys true bliss. |
đ¤ 6. Subtle Interpretation
1. Literal Meaning:
Before giving up this present body, if one is able to withstand the urge (impulse) born of material desire and anger, he is a Yogi and a happy man in this world.
2. Spiritual Inner Meaning:
Vegam (The Impulse): Desire and Anger come like a 'Storm' or a 'Rushing River'. When desire arises, the body and mind tremble. When anger arises, the blood boils. It is a 'Pressure'.
Sodhum (To Withstand/Endure): This is not about 'suppression', but 'withstanding' like a rock withstands waves. The impulse will come, but it should not wash you away.
Prak-sharira-vimokshanat (Before Death): Everyone becomes quiet after death. The importance is 'Ihaiva' (Here and Now). One who has self-control when senses are young and impulses are strong is the real hero. In old age, control is a necessity; in youth, it is 'Yoga'.
đ 7. Comprehensive Meaning
The strongest person in the world is not the wrestler, but the one who can control the impulses of his own mind. One who has conquered Kama and Krodha has conquered everything.
đ 8. Connections to Other Verses
| Related Verse | Description |
|---|---|
| Verse 2.62-63 | "Krodhad bhavati sammohah..." - Describes the sequence from Desire to Anger to Destruction. |
| Verse 3.37 | "Kama esha krodha esha..." - Desire and Anger are the all-devouring enemies of man. |
đ️ 9. Key Takeaways
- Challenge: Withstanding the force of desire and anger is the greatest austerity.
- Timing: This must be done 'today' and 'now', not waiting for old age.
- Result: Self-control is the only key to happiness.
đĨ 10. Deep Spiritual Insight
Impulse and Energy: Desire and Anger are 'Energy'. When we 'withstand' this impulse (without reacting), that energy is not wasted. It gets transformed into 'Ojas' and 'Tejas' (Spiritual Power). This is called Sublimation (Urdhvareta). To endure is to accumulate power.
đŧ 11. Contemporary Relevance
Impulse Control: In today's age of 'Instant Gratification', we are habituated to reacting. Angry? Send a text immediately. Want it? Order immediately. Gita says - Pause. Keep a 'Gap' between Impulse and Reaction. This is Emotional Intelligence.
đ§ 12. Psychological Meaning
Self-Regulation: In psychology, this is 'Self-Regulation'. People who can manage their impulses are more successful and happy in life (The Marshmallow Test). This verse is the foundation of Willpower.
đĄ 13. Philosophical Meaning (Nishtha)
The Ignorant (Weak):
Swept away as soon as the impulse comes. "I couldn't help it." Slave.
The Yogi (Strong):
Observes the impulse, withstands it, and remains calm. Master.
đš 14. Detailed Conclusion & Message
When a person digests these external impulses within himself, what happens inside him? When the external noise quiets down, where does he find happiness?
In the next verse (5.24), Krishna will describe the internal state of such a Yogi who lives in 'Inner Happiness' (Antah-sukha) and 'Inner Light' (Antar-jyoti).
